How the detection works, what it misses, and how to correct it when it gets a day wrong

Frequently Asked Questions

iOS wakes the app through the significant location change service when you have moved a long way. Stamp Days hands that point to Apple's reverse geocoder, gets a country back, closes the visit you were on and opens a new one.

You do not have to open the app for this to happen. That is what the "Always" location permission is for.

Fix it by hand. Open the History tab, tap the visit, and change the entry or exit date. If a trip is missing entirely, add it with Add Past Visit and set the dates yourself.

This is expected rather than a fault. The app infers a crossing from your phone's movement, so a short hop over a border, a phone that was switched off, or a stretch with no signal can all end up logged late or missed. The history is editable for exactly that reason.

So the count carries on while the app is closed, which is the whole point of it. A tracker you have to remember to open is a tracker you will forget to open.

The app asks for "When In Use" first, behind a button you tap, and only asks for "Always" afterwards. If you grant "When In Use" only, the country updates when you open the app rather than on its own.

It uses the significant location change service, which is the low power option iOS provides for this. It wakes the app when you have moved a long distance instead of following GPS continuously, so it costs far less than a navigation app does.

Yes. Turn Manual Mode on in Settings and pick your current country from the list. With manual mode on, the app reads no location data at all.

The map, the history, the backfill and the stats all still work. You enter the trips yourself instead of having them detected.

Only if you enter them. Apple's geocoder answers with a country and never a state, so there is nothing for the app to detect a state from.

You can record a state on a visit yourself, in the same place you edit or backfill a trip.

Yes, over any date range. Use Add Past Visit, pick the country, set a start and an end date. The app tells you how many days that adds and previews the entry before you save it.

There is no limit on how far back you can go or how many trips you add.

It shows the current country and its day count, reading the same local data as the app through an app group on the device.

It refreshes when the app records a change and on the schedule iOS gives widgets, so it can trail the app by a short while. Open the app if you want the two to agree right now.

No. It counts days and shows them to you. It does not know your nationality, your visas or the rules of any country, and it gives no legal or tax advice.

People use it alongside rules like Schengen 90/180 and the 183-day residency test, but the app is the day count, not the ruling. Check it against the rule that applies to you, and against your own stamps and tickets where the difference matters.

The whole app is free. Automatic tracking, the map, the full history, the charts, the widget and unlimited backfilled trips are all included.

There is no subscription, no advertising and no in-app purchase. The app ships without any purchase code in it.

Your travel history stays on your device. Stamp Days has no server, no account, and no analytics.

Country names come from Apple's own location services, which is the one request the app makes to anything outside the phone. The privacy page sets out what that covers and what it does not.

Delete the app. Your countries, visits and settings live in its own store on the device and go with it.

To stop it reading your location but keep the history, switch automatic tracking off in Settings, or withdraw the permission in the iOS Settings app.

No. Version 1.0 is an iPhone app and is not built for iPad. There is no Mac or Apple Watch version either.

It needs iOS 18 or later.
