Privacy Policy

The short version

Fold Cue recognises your speech on your iPhone. Your scripts, your voice and your videos never reach us. There is no account and no advertising.

The app can send anonymous usage counts, like "a take was saved", but only after you turn that on. It is off until you do.

Who is responsible

Fold Cue is published by Navid Gooran of Applestan, who is the data controller for the app.

Your voice and your scripts

Voice follow listens to you so the script can keep up. That listening is done by Apple's speech recognition running on the device:

• Audio is turned into words on your iPhone, and those words are only used to find your place in the script
• No audio, transcript or script text is sent to us or to any analytics service
• The first time you use a language, iOS downloads a speech model for it from Apple. After that, voice follow works offline

Your scripts, including ones you import from text, Markdown, RTF, Word or PDF files, are stored in the app on your phone. Nobody else can read them unless you turn on iCloud sync, described below.

Camera, microphone and Photos

iOS asks before Fold Cue can use any of these:

• Camera, to record you while you read
• Microphone, to record your voice with the video and to listen for voice follow
• Speech recognition, which runs on the device as described above
• Photos, add only, so a finished take can be saved to your library. The app cannot see the photos and videos already there

Your takes are saved in the app's own storage on your iPhone. They are not uploaded anywhere and they never sync. A take only leaves the app when you save it to Photos or share it yourself.

Text sized for your distance

If "Size text for my distance" is on, the camera's built-in face detection measures how far away you are standing, so the script can be sized for that distance between takes. The app keeps only that one distance number, in memory. It stores no face data, no image and nothing that could recognise who you are.

Anonymous usage counts, only if you say yes

During setup, and later in Settings > Privacy, there is a switch called Share anonymous usage counts. It starts off. Until you turn it on, the analytics service is never started and nothing is sent.

If you turn it on, the app sends events such as "a take was started", "a take was saved", "a spoken command was used" or "an export finished", with counts, durations and choices attached. For example, how long a take was, whether voice follow or steady scroll was used, which kind of microphone was in use, or which export options were picked. It also sends the app opening and closing, error reports, and whether the Pro screen was shown or Pro was bought.

What it never sends is your script text, a transcript, your audio, your video, a script title or a file name.

The data is:

• Not linked to you. There is no account, name or email. Events carry a random identifier the analytics service creates on your device
• Processed by PostHog on its EU servers (PostHog Privacy Policy)
• Not used for tracking across other apps or websites, and never sold or shared with advertisers

The App Store privacy label says the same thing: Product Interaction, Other Usage Data and Purchase History, used for analytics and not linked to you.

The legal basis is your consent. Turn the switch off at any time and the app stops sending straight away.

The short survey

Once, after you have kept your first take, the app may ask two quick questions: what you record, and how you found Fold Cue. It only asks if you have turned on usage counts, because the answers are sent the same way. If you pick "a blog or article", you can type its name. That typed answer is sent as you wrote it, so leave it empty if you would rather not say. "Not now" skips it and stops it asking again.

iCloud sync

Fold Cue Pro can sync your scripts between your iPhones with iCloud. It is off until you turn on Sync scripts with iCloud in Settings.

• Only scripts sync. Takes and videos stay on the iPhone that recorded them
• Scripts are stored in your own private iCloud database, under your Apple Account. We cannot read them
• This part of the service is run by Apple under Apple's privacy policy

Buying Pro

Fold Cue is free to download. Pro is a single optional in-app purchase, with no subscription. Apple handles the payment completely. We never see your card, your billing address or your Apple Account. The app reads Apple's record of the purchase on the device to know whether Pro is unlocked.

What Fold Cue does not do

• No account or sign-in
• No advertising and no advertising identifier
• No App Tracking Transparency prompt, because nothing tracks you across apps
• No servers of ours that store your content

Children

Fold Cue is a general-audience video tool. It is not directed at children, and it collects nothing that identifies a user of any age.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask for access, correction, deletion or restriction of processing, object to processing, ask for data portability and withdraw consent. Email the address above and we will answer within a month. Because usage counts are not linked to a name or account, we may need the random identifier from your device to find them, and without it we usually cannot tell which data is yours. You can also complain to a data protection authority, in particular in the country where you live or work.

To stop usage counts, switch off Share anonymous usage counts in Settings. To stop iCloud sync, switch off Sync scripts with iCloud, and remove the synced data from iCloud in the iOS Settings app if you want it gone there too. To remove everything the app holds on your iPhone, delete the app. Takes you saved to Photos stay in Photos until you delete them there.

Changes to this policy

If a future version of Fold Cue changes what it collects, this page and the App Store privacy label get updated before that version ships, and the date below changes with it.
