How to connect to your Mac, how to use the keyboard and trackpad, and what to do if something goes wrong
Connecting to your Mac
On the Mac, open System Settings, choose General, then Sharing, and turn on Screen Sharing. Click the ⓘ button next to it and, under Allow access for, choose your user or All users.
If Remote Management is on, turn it off first. The Mac allows only one of the two. There is nothing to install on the Mac.
The short name and the password of your account on the Mac, the same as Apple's own Screen Sharing. Uplid never needs the separate option VNC viewers may control screen with password.
If you save the password, it stays in the Keychain of your device and goes only to that Mac.
Check that your device and the Mac are on the same Wi-Fi network, and that the Mac is awake. Then check that Uplid may use the local network: in the iOS Settings app, open Privacy & Security, then Local Network, and turn on Uplid.
You can also add the Mac by hand with its address. The Sharing pane on the Mac shows it under Screen Sharing, for example vnc://192.168.1.20. Enter only the part after vnc://.
Yes, with a VPN such as Tailscale on the Mac and on your device. Add the Mac by its VPN address. Uplid has no server of its own in between, and you should never open the Screen Sharing port (5900) to the internet.
In Uplid's Settings, When someone else uses the Mac decides. Ask to share their screen asks the person at the Mac. Log in to my own screen opens a separate session for your account in the background, as Apple's Screen Sharing does.
Yes. Connect, then type your Mac password on Uplid's keyboard and press Return, as you would at the Mac.
Using Uplid
Open the iPhone Duo part way and stand it on a table with the fold across, like a small laptop. The top half shows the Mac. The bottom half is the keyboard with the trackpad under it.
Laid flat, folded, or on any other iPhone or iPad, the Mac fills the screen, the screen is the trackpad, and the keyboard button brings up the keyboard.
Tap the trackpad to click. Tap with two fingers to right-click. To drag, tap, then touch again straight away and slide. If you prefer three-finger drag, turn it on in Settings, under Trackpad.
A finger resting on the trackpad does not press the button, the same as on a Mac.
Pinch on the trackpad. The picture zooms in where the pointer is, and pinching back zooms out. A double tap with two fingers, or the zoom button, jumps in and out.
To send the pinch to the Mac app instead, for example to zoom a photo in Preview, open Settings and set Pinch zooms to The Mac app.
A Mac screen is a lot of pixels to send over Wi-Fi. In Settings, turn on Half resolution (faster), and on a slow network also Fewer colours on slow networks. A 5 GHz Wi-Fi network close to the Mac helps too.
Open the session menu with the ⋯ button and choose a display under Picture, or All displays.
Uplid's keyboard has to match the keyboard layout set on the Mac. Choose US or German under Keyboard in Settings. We are still checking every key against Macs set to other layouts, so please email us which key it was.
With Share the clipboard on, which is the default, text you copy on the Mac with Command-C lands on your device's clipboard, and Command-V on Uplid's keyboard pastes your device's text on the Mac. Switch it off in Settings to keep the two clipboards apart.
Yes. A keyboard connected to your iPhone or iPad types on the Mac.
No. Uplid shows the picture and sends your typing and touches. Sound stays on the Mac.
