Frequently Asked Questions
What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in photos by your camera or phone. It includes the date and time a photo was taken, GPS coordinates, camera make and model, lens info, and settings like ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. Most people don't realize this data exists, but it travels with the image file whenever you share it.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your photo never leaves your device. No data is sent to any server, and nothing is stored. You can even use it offline after the page loads.
What metadata can reveal my location?
GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude, and altitude) are the most direct location data. But other fields can hint at your location too: the timezone offset, the camera's local time settings, and even cell tower information that some phones embed. If your phone has location services enabled for the camera, every photo you take likely has GPS data attached.
How do I remove metadata from photos?
On iPhone, you can use PhotoStrip to batch-remove metadata from hundreds of photos at once. It lets you selectively strip GPS data, camera info, timestamps, or everything. On desktop, tools like ExifTool or ImageOptim can do the job. Some social media platforms strip EXIF data on upload, but not all of them do.
What photo formats are supported?
This viewer supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, and HEIC files. JPEG photos typically contain the most EXIF data since it's the standard format for digital cameras. PNG files usually have less metadata, while HEIC is the default format on modern iPhones.
